It is important to seal water out of the wall. It promotes mold, wood destroying fungus, rust and can weaken the stucco. Most painters just don't seem to care and leave gaps open.

This house was over 25 years old. The original painter and the last 2 painters did not seal above this door. The sides are caulked but because the top is out of sight they left it unsealed for rain to enter the wall......maybe some creepy crawlers too.

The main purpose of paint is to protect. Aesthetics is secondary. Paint protects metal from rusting, wood from water damage and drying out. Paint also helps stop water absorption into stucco which can promote damage.
A re-stucco, replacing rotted wood and rusted metal, not to mention mold can cost thousands later.
