Stucco delamination is mostly associated with stucco being applied over a painted surface. Many homeowners have had their painted block home stuccoed or changed from a painted rough skip trowel texture stucco to a smoother one. When not done properly the new stucco can delaminate, just plain start falling off the wall.

Stucco does not bond to paint without the use of a boning agent. There are acrylic bonders and PVA bonders (poly vinyl acetate).

Many stucco contractors use the wrong bonding agent to stucco over paint. PVA's. are basically school glue and are only intended for interior work or to bond new concrete over 1-inch thick to existing concrete. They are sold for that propose but stucco crews use them incorrectly and with moisture they will fail.

Another common mistake is not getting the stucco applied while the bonder is still tacky.
