Fading Paint

Fading is enviable with paint. It is caused by sunlight (UV) damaging the pigments. The more sun exposure the more fading occurs.  In general dark colors fade faster than lighter colors. Certain colors such as red and colors made with red (some browns or purple for example) tend to fade faster also.

There is also fading due to burn out. Burn out is when the pigment is damaged by high pH. This can happen when stucco or other cement products are painted before they are fully cured and are not properly primed. Primers over stucco should be able to handle a pH of 10.

In the picture, a spot that was touched up shows just how much paint fading occurred in only 3 years.
